Happy New Year, everyone! I’m writing this at 12:38am on January 1st, 2014 and thinking back to the past year and all the ups and downs.
As we all know, it’s about this time that people start proclaiming their New Year’s Resolutions and trying to better their lives. I’m usually not a resolution person but I do have one this year and it’s simply to stay positive. I told someone this and they said it was a bit of a cop out because there’s no way to measure staying positive and to track your progress at it. That’s mostly true but I can stay positive on social media and I can stay positive at my photo shoots, and this will carry on to the people around me.
As for staying positive in my personal life, I think I’ve been able to do that recently. I think it’s a good idea to try and look at something negative and try and make it positive. It’s about thinking differently. When I moved back to DC I was very upset about the whole situation but I decided that instead of sitting at home and being miserable that I’d just go out and meet people and photograph strangers. The connections I made with these people were totally worthwhile. This was a positive thing to do with my free time and changed my experience immediately. I think that’s pretty powerful.
I’ll close with a quote I recently found that’s been attributed to Abraham Lincoln that’s about changing the negatives of a situation to a positive.
We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.
