Amy – Chinatown Musician Headshots & Portraits

Amy - UMD Musician/Singer

Amy is a University of Maryland student and singer who reached out to me online for some new headshots. She had just cut her hair shorter and needed something that showed it off. After a few simple headshots we decided to try some different photos. We were lucky to be at an awesome venue that had a variety of different sets we could shoot at. I highly recommend it to anyone in the DC area. It’s right off the Gallery Place/Chinatown stop and across the street from the Verizon center.

Venue: The Loft at 600 F St, NW Washington DC

Camera: Nikon D300

Lenses: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Nikon 105mm f/2.8

We started off with a simple headshot on brick wall with an Octagon Soft Box and moved on to some low key photographs, which are quickly becoming my absolute favorite kind of portraits. The low key photo was done with two gridded flashes.

We of course did a few shots on a white seamless. I used a white projector screen in the venue and blew it out to white with two Yonguno 560’s with shoot through umbrellas.

This last shot was simply ambient light with a little fill provided by the silver side of a 5 in 1 reflector. I love how playful Amy looks and I love that super strong backlight.
